Our Story
After leaving the military in 2011, Kirby struggled with what was next. With a strong interest in real estate, he slowly began learning how to buy and rehab properties.
He enjoyed turning challenging properties into the beautiful homes they once were, but still searched for a larger purpose.
Eventually Kirby discovered the HUD/VASH program which provides homeless military veterans with a voucher that will assist the vet to rent the home of their choice.
Having a strong desire to combine his love for real estate with a passion for working with other veterans, Kirby started Green Vet Homes in 2016 with the purpose of buying, renovating, and renting homes to homeless veterans.
Since then Green Vet Homes has been able to provide quality rehabbed housing for many homeless veterans, as well as many short and long term rental properties for non-veteran residents.
Each property we purchase will either be rented to a homeless veteran, or a portion of the profit obtained from buying, renovating and either selling or renting the home, will go to assisting veterans and their families.

Kirby Atwell
I graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 2005 and then served 6 years as an officer in the United States Army.
In 2011, I left active duty military and started my first full-time property rehabbing company, iCandy Homes, with two good friends. Over the following 4 years, we rehabbed over 70 properties, transforming them from outdated fixer-uppers into magnificent works of art.
In 2016, I set out to form a new company leveraging everything I’d learned over the previous 10 years. I wanted to continue purchasing and rehabbing properties, and also serve a purpose that I’m passionate about: supporting veterans and their families. Thus, Green Vet Homes was born.
I’m blessed to be able to do what I love everyday with my father. At the same time, I’m able to improve local communities and support veterans. I’m thankful for the experiences I’ve had in the military and business, and for the people who’ve always supported me throughout this process.
Cory Atwell
I was drafted and served 2 years in the U.S. Army. After the military I graduated from Western IL University in 1977. Growing up in a small town I worked numerous jobs; many of which were in construction.
Throughout my 35 year career in the public sector I participated in many construction projects, such as golf course club house construction, and the design and construction of fitness & community centers, racquet clubs, parks, and playgrounds.
After retiring from park district life in 2011, I joined my son Kirby at iCandy Homes. In 2016 when Kirby followed his passion and started Green Vet Homes, I was blessed to once again work with him in this new endeavor. Not only do I get to work with my son, but we get to make a difference in the lives of veterans.
